Responsibilities of a Support worker in different settings

Support Workers can work in a vast variety of institutions and long-term care centers and the duties and responsibilities of a support worker widely differ depending on the type of setting and the needs of the individual they are assigned for. Here are three different setting that requires a support worker and the kind of job functions they need to follow:

Hospitals

Personal Support Workers are not commonly seen in hospitals, yet they assist nurses greatly and ensure patients overall satisfaction of aftercare. PSWs are frequently engaged in hospitals to undertake patient care and critical care. Every job done by a PSW must be under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician of the patient as PSWs are not authorized to undertake any independent decisions for the patient’s medical care.

PSWs’ primary responsibilities include providing a safe and relaxing atmosphere for patients, lifting and transferring patients as needed, assisting with personal hygiene, communicating patient progress and changes to the RN in a timely and accurate manner, sanitizing patient rooms and used equipments, providing meals to assigned patients, assisting with food intake, maintaining patient’s diet plan and care plans, and involving with patients in leisure.

PSWs who work at hospitals usually have fixed hours, benefits and salary packages unlike other settings. They might also have multiple patients to take care of during the same shift and may have different job responsibilities as required by the patient they are caring for.

Private Residences

PSWs that work in a home setting or private residence are also called Home Support Workers. Clients who are unable to care for themselves or conduct everyday duties such as cooking, cleaning, dressing, and bathing are assisted by home support workers. They may also provide long-term, as well as basic health care and services to the patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or physician. They must also  assist patients with personal hygiene and other daily duties, as well as providing basic health care services such as medicine administration. They must also monitor and report on the health of the patients to the RN.

These people may need assistance around the house, and home support workers are expected to aid with housekeeping and laundry, meal planning and preparation, cleaning and disinfecting the house, and restocking basic household supplies as needed.

Schools/Colleges

Student support workers differ from personal support workers in many of their duties. Students receive assistance from student support workers in order to help them better understand and interact in school and classrooms rather than in personal assistance. As members of the student services team, they assist kids with special education needs and depending on the type of institution, they are required to adapt learning resources to fit diverse needs. Student support staff must have excellent communication skills and a high level of consistency in order to convey things to students clearly.

They collaborate closely with students to develop techniques for improving organizational and study abilities in order to achieve academic achievement in a range of areas. They also encourage and support student involvement in school activities and, when necessary, act as a spokesperson for students.
